Richard J. Gatling was born on September 12, 1818 in Hertford County, North Carolina. He was a prominent inventor and held 48 patents. His most notable invention, is what we now know as, the Gatling Gun. It had the unprecedented ability to fire over a thousand rounds per minute. His design prevailed and is still in common use. In 1891, Gatling received the honor of becoming the first President of the American Association of Inventors and Manufacturers. Richard Gatling was a Member of Centre Lodge No. 23 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Brother Gatling died on February 26, 1903.
