Born at Litchfield in 1617, Elias Ashmole was an antiquarian and astrologer. He is known principly for the ashmolean museum in oxford. In 1638 he was admitted a soliciter. In 1646 he was made a mason at warrington lancasher in a speculative lodge. There was a 35 year gap with no mention of his masonic journey. The only time he reappears masonically at a lodge meeting was in 1682 when he says he was admitted into the fellowship of freemasons. The suggestion is that he was there to see his old friend Sir William Wilson accepted into freemasonry on the occasion of ashmoles visit. Although there may have been others unknown, he is known to us as the first recorded freemason to be initiated into an english lodge. He died in 1692.
