The premier grand lodge was founded in 1717. By 1730 some masons felt that the grand lodge was departing from the originally understood fundamentals of freemasonry.. In 1751 they formed their own grand lodge known as The Grand Lodge of England According to the Old Constitutions also known as The Ancients. This caused uncertainty in the craft both at home and abroad. The 3rd and 4th dukes of Atholl were involved with the ancients for more than four decades so members of this newer grand lodge were also known as Atholl Masons. Their ritual was similar to the irish and scottish grand lodges who reciprocated by recognizing them. The separateness of the two english grand lodges continued until 1813 when the two became one.
