Contrary to popular belief the year 1717 was not the origin of the fraternity of freemasons but rather the organisation of such. When one speculative and three operative lodges came together at the goose and gridiron tavern located in the church yard of St. Pauls cathedral, little did they know the far reaching implications of their assembly. In forming the Premier Grand Lodge of England they elected Anthony Sayer to be their grand master and agreed to hold grand lodge meetings yearly which continue to this day on a quarterly basis.
