Lewis “Lew” Wallace was born on April 10, 1827 in Brookville, Indiana. Wallace was a true civil servant who faithfully performed his duties as an American statesman, lawyer, Union general during the American Civil War, Governor of New Mexico from 1878-1881, and U.S. Minister to the Ottoman Empire from 1881-1885. In addition to his countless years of service, Wallace is perhaps best known for authoring the 19th century’s best selling American novel, “Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ” in 1880. Lew Wallace was Initiated on December 15, 1850 at Fountain Lodge No. 60 in Covington, Indiana. Brother Wallace was called from labor on February 15, 1905.
