Visit John Wanamaker's Department Store
Summary
John Wanamaker's Department Store was Philadelphia's first department store, and the first to be completely illuminated by electricity. The store was first opened in 1866 and was the first department to implement a refund guarantee. In 1909 purchased a grand pipe organ for the store and was installed several years later. This massive 28,500 pipe organ is the centerpiece of the store's Grand Court and offers daily concerts. Now owned by Macy's, Wanamaker's has been keeping up it's grand traditions and is hailed as a state landmark. John Wanamaker was a distinguished Freemason, and was a member of Friendship Lodge No. 200.
