Summary
The Library Company of Philadelphia is America's first lending library ann oldest cultural institution, and home to an extensive collection of rare and historically important documents and artifacts and was founded by Brother Benjamin Franklin in 1731. Among the most impressive items on display are the personal library of James Logan and Franklin's Leyden Jars. Next door to the Library Company is the Historical society of Pennsylvania which was founded in 1824, and contains more precious historical relics of famous Americans and Freemasons. The Library Company is free and open to the public on weekdays.
