Visit The Statue of Liberty

Summary

The Statue of Liberty and it's symbolism is well known the world over. Far fewer, however, know of it's Masonic roots. Also known as Lady Liberty, this 300ft tall beacon of freedom was designed by Brother Frederic A. Bartholdi, a member of Lodge Alsace-Lorraine in Paris. He conceived the design while on a trip to the United States and envisioned a grand monument to welcome immigrants to a new life in a free land. With the assistance of Broter Gustave Eiffel, who designed the underlying framework of the statue, the masterpiece was constructed. On July 4th 1884, the finished statue was presented to Levi Morton, the American Ambassador in Paris. A month later, the presiding Grand Master of New York, William A. Brodie with full Masonic ceremony, laid the cornerstone for what would be the pedestal for the statue. The Statue of Liberty was transported from France to the U.S. and was unveiled in grand fashion on October 28, 1886. There is much more of this historic monument's history is waiting to be discovered by anyone desiring further edification at the National Park Service website.
