Visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial

Summary

Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of America's most famous memorials, attracting millions of visitors each year. Situated in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the Mt. Rushmore carvings depict the faces of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The mountain stands 5,725 high, while the faces themselves are roughly as tall as a six story building. There is a rich history behind the conception and creation of this grand monument, but there are a few facts that may be interesting to the visiting Freemason. The monument was designed by master sculptor Gutzon Borglum, and his son Lincoln. Gutzon was raised as a Master Mason on June 10,1904, in Howard Lodge No. 35 in New York City. Lincoln Borglum was also a Freemason, and a member of Battle River Lodge No. in Hermosa, South Dakota. Together with over 400 skilled workers and 14 years of dedication and labor, was carved from the mountain a true national treasure.
