Loans & Charity

Brother, can you help me pay my bills?

As masons we are bound to help each other when our own personal situation allows for it. This however does not mean giving away money or making loans. Most grand lodges already have a system in place to render aid to brethren in legitimate need and that is the first place to point a brother in need. Every once in a while a brother may approach you personally and ask you for help. When this occurs, you must weigh the situation on it's own merits and decide for yourself if you are in a position to help. However, if the day comes when another brothers tells you that you must ("must" being the operative word there) give them a loan because you are both brothers, that is the day you must tell that brother that he is acting inappropriately and has exited the boundaries of masonic etiquette. Always remember, a brother can always go to their mother lodge for help, if one tells you otherwise, it might give you pause.
