Leland Stanford

Born March 24, 1824 Initiated Raised March, 1850 Died June 21, 1893 Leland Stanford was born on March 24, 1824 in Watervliet, New York. Sanford studied law at Cazenovia Seminary, was admitted to the bar in 1848. Four years later, he followed his brothers to California during the gold rush. There he spent the next three years successfully operating a general supply store for the gold rush settlers. By 1861, Stanford was considered one of "The Big Four" powerful businessmen and became a major investor in the Central Pacific Railroad, and was elected to serve as the Governor of California. His connections and stature lead him to many successful business ventures as he established himself as a wealthy railroad tycoon. After loosing their only son to typhoid fever at the age of 15, the Stanfords decided that "the children of California shall be our children" and to find a philanthropic endeavor to memorialize their sonStanford, along with his wife, Jane, established Stanford University which opened it's doors in 1891. Stanford was a member of Prometheus Lodge No.17 and Michigan Lodge No. 47. On June 21, 1893, Brother Leland Stanford was called from labor, and was laid to rest at the family mausoleum ay the Stanford University Campus.
