Daniel Carter Beard was born on June 21, 1850 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Beard had a love for the outdoors from a young age, and relished stories and tales of the pioneer life. In 1905 Beard founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, later renamed the Boy Pioneers of America, a youth organization based on American frontier traditions. Five years later, Beard merged his organization into the Boy Scouts of America, and became one of the first National Scout Commissioners of the Boy Scouts. Beard is also credited for helping to establish the Camp Fire Girls, Founding Boy Scout Troop 1 in New York, and establishing the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award. Beard was initiated in Mariners Lodge No. 67, in New York City. Brother Daniel Beard was called from labor on June 11, 1941 at the age of 91 in Suffern, New York and is laid to rest at the Brick Church Cemetery in Spring Valley, New York.
