Richard J. Gatling was born on September 12, 1818 in Hertford County, North Carolina. Gatling was a prominent inventor and holder of 48 patents. His most notable invention was what is now known at the Gatling Gun, which then had the ability to fire over one thousand rounds per minute. In 1891, Gatling received the honor of becoming the first president of the American Association of Inventors and Manufacturers. Richard Gatling was a member of Centre Lodge No. 23 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Brother Gatling was called from labor on February 26, 1903.
