James Hoban was born in Ireland in 1758. He emmigrated to America at the age of 19, and established a career in architecture. In 1792, Hoban entered a competition to design an “American Presidential Palace” and was judged the winner. At the request of President George Washington, Hoban was sent to the District of Columbia to begin the work. The following year, President Washington, along with many distinguished men and Masons of the time, gathered to lay the cornerstone of the White House. Brother Hoban died on December 8th, 1831 in Washington D.C.
