A masonic constitution as we have it today is in brief the government of lodges, members and the various ceremonies such as funerals, installations etc. 926 AD is the first known record of a masonic constitution originating in York. As with many hand copied documents, discrepancies crept in. Subsequent to the founding of the premier lodge of england a committee of 14 masons reviewed the newly prepared anderson constitutions to be adopted and published in 1723. These, as a revised version of the york constitution have continued as the basis for the works issued by grand lodges to this day. The book of constitutions giving the summary of ancient charges and regulations is the government for all masons.
