In the early days of freemasonry, the world was budding with new knowledge and ways of thinking. History looks back on the 18th century as the age of enlightenment. The masonic lodge provided an ideal forum for men to participate in this exciting era and the concept of discussing new ideas and philosophies became an integral component of freemasonry. So much so that presenting something of scholarly worth was made a part of advancement through the degrees of the order. Requiring a candidate to prepare and present material to the lodge before progressing to the next degree. This practice still exists somewhat universally however the extent of it varies dramatically from country to country. With some lodges requiring only a minimal understand to progress.
