Laurence Dermott was born in 1720. He was the mainstay of the Ancients movement. He was one of the most remarkable masons that ever lived. He was initiated in Dublin in 1740 in lodge #26. He was its master in 1746. He came to England in 1748 and joined a moderns lodge. He later went over to the ancients. Between 1752 and 1771 he was the ancients grand secretary. In 1756 he compiled the ancients book of constitutions and titled it ahiman rezon. Between 1771 to 1777 and 1783 to 1787 he was appointed deputy grand master to the third duke of athol. He was highly enthused by the royal arch which he thought to be the root, heart and marrow of freemasonry. Dermott died in 1791.
