Proficiency

Featuring Worshipful Brother Gerald

In freemasonry there are times where a mason must prove his knowledge of a particular subject. When a man is initiated an entered apprentice or passed to become a fellowcraft, he is required to demonstrate some knowledge of the events that took place to bring him there. This demonstration to the brethren is known as a proficiency. Likewise, when a master mason wants to go through the chairs to become an officer, he must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the work he will be required to undertake in the desired position. This demonstration, often not done in open lodge, but rather for an inspector or grand lodge officer is also known as a proficiency. The contents of each proficeincy varies dramatically among different points in history and jurisdictions.
