The Premier Grand Lodge of England was established in 1717. In 1751 another grand lodge known as the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of England was created. Although being formed much later, this new grand lodge saw themselves as The Ancients and referred to the older, premier grand lodge as The Moderns. These two grand lodges would remain rivals for many decades. Attempts to unite the two repeatedly failed until the year 1813 when the Duke of Sussex became The Grand Master of the Moderns, and the Duke of Kent became the grand master of the Ancients. Both being sons of King George III made them brothers in both blood and masonry. They took only weeks to finalize the union and create what is known today as The United Grand Lodge of England.
