Origins of Freemasonry
George Martin
1897
No Jew, no Christian can deny,
The grand antiquity that crowns
The mystic art, the mystic tie,
On which the senseless bigot frowns.
Who first assumed the badge still worn
By men of every land and clime
The badge that proudest kings have worn,
The pride of place, the pride of time.
Not Solomon, as some believe,
Not Moses by the Red Sea wave,
But Adam, when the blushing Eve,
The apron to her lover gave.
'Twas then that Adam in return,
Gave Eve the Mystic grip, I ween,
That all her daughters wish to learn,
From barefoot lass to jewelled Queen.
Now every lodge should have its niche,
For Adam in his first attire
And eke for her who designed to stitch
The apron for our ancient sire.
Toast, Brothers, toast the blissful pair,
Who fondly on the level met,
And kissing, parted on the square,
When rigid Nature claimed her debt.
