David Wooster

Born March 2, 1711 Initiated Raised Died May 2, 1777 David Wooster was born on March 2nd 1711 in Stratford, Connecticut. The youngest of six children, Wooster was raised and educated in the Puritan principals of New England and graduated from Yale College at the age of 28. After many years of military sercive, he returned to New Haven, where he received a warrant from the Provincial Grand Master of Massachusetts to establish a Masonic Lodge. On November 12, 1750 Wooster secured a charter for the first Masonic Lodge of Connecticut, and the following month, presided as Worshipful Master at the first meeting of Hiram Lodge # 1. Wooster continued his military service and lead his men through the French and Indian War and on to the American Revolutionary War. When he returned to Connecticut in 1776, he assumed command as the state's first Major General. The following year while leading his men in the Battle of Ridgefield, Wooster was mortally wounded by the Redcoats, and was called from labor On May 2, 1777. General Wooster was laid to rest in the Wooster Cemetery on Mount Moriah, where today stands a 30ft stone monument erected in his honor.
