Albert Mackey

Born March 12, 1807 Initiated 1841 Raised Died June 20, 1881 Albert Wilson Mackey was born on March 12, 1807 in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1834, Mackey graduated from the Charleston Medical College with honors. In 1841, Mackey was made a Mason in Saint Andrews Lodge #10 in Charleston. The following year affiliated with Solomon's Lodge #1 where he served as Worshipful Master, and became the Grand Secretary for the Grand Lodge of Carolina, and office he would hold for the next 25 years. Mackey is best known for his literary work on Freemasonry. From 1845 to around 1880 he authored many of the greatest contributions to the craft. Among his best known works are A Lexicon of Freemasonry (1845), Tame True Mystic Tie (1851), Principals of Masonic Law (1856), Symbolism of Freemasonry (1875), and Encyclopedia of Freemasonry (1874). Brother Mackey was called from labor at the age of 74 on June 20, 1881.
